St. Helena Catholic Church was founded in Amite City in 1868. Since that time there has always been a Catholic Church on the corner South First St and W Chestnut St in Amite. The irst church was destroyed in the 1908 Tornado. The second church was destroyed in the 1940 Tornado. Still the faithful of the parish persevered and rebuilt again.

Rosaryville is the Catholic Retreat center located on the southern end of our Parish. It as long been seen as a place of peace and solitude where many from all corners of this country have encountered God. Rosary Hall is the main building of the campus housing the chapel, dining hall, administration, and dorm rooms. The image in the center depicts Mary, the mother of Jesus, giving the rosary to St. Dominic.

Tangipahoa’s 150th Instagram Celebration
In February 2019, the Hammond Historic District began a social media campaign to engage the people of Tangipahoa Parish in telling their stories of what makes the Parish special. The public was invited to participate by sharing photos using the hashtags #PreserveTangi150 and #Tangi150 for a chance to have their photos curated and selected for an exhibition at the Hammond Regional Arts Center. Now these photos are curated online as a virtual exhibit.
Photos submitted tell the stories of the people who shape our cities, towns, and historic neighborhoods in Tangipahoa Parish. Living amongst architectural treasures big and small is a way of life in the Parish. We live in vibrant historic communities and we are inspired by historic architecture, natural landscapes and waterways found here, and we have a unique history. Tangipahoa thrives through the preservation of historic buildings and our unique natural environment.
